Piel de Sapo rockmelon, a popular choice in Spain means “frog skin” in Spanish, a reference to its rough, mottled rind that resembles an amphibian. This appearance has given it a nickname in Australian of “Croc-melon.” Shaped like a football, the Piel de Sapo’s thick rind gives it excellent shelf life and transportability. Beneath this tough exterior lies a dense, juicy, and refreshingly sweet flesh that must be tasted to be believed. Originating from Turkey and known in Italy as a late cropper, the Piel de Sapo is much sweeter than the often rock-hard supermarket cantaloupes. In Italy, this melon is harvested and hung above the rafters to be enjoyed months later.
